    Amazon.com Review
Reader Rabbit takes a road trip, and kids who go along for the ride will learn everything from homonyms to alphabetizing with this occasionally inspired CD-ROM. Kids can follow the Road to Imagination to 15 different reading lands, or visit Wordville Station for straightforward access to word games. Both of these multilevel elements are designed for kids who already have a grasp of the alphabet.

Each stop along the Road to Imagination has a reading-related theme, such as an owl looking for words with long and short vowel sounds for the letter e. Animated hot spots reinforce the theme, as well as activities that involve rhyming, syllabication, listening to letter sounds, and word recognition. There are also a couple of books to be found at each stop along the road (30 in all), with questions at the end that inspire both reading comprehension and imaginative flights of fancy. An easy-to-use recording program enables kids to read the books out loud and play back their words. Wordville Station has four games that teach compound words, vowel sounds, alphabetizing, and matching opposites, homonyms, and rhyming words.

I Can Read has some bright moments: Reader Rabbit loosens up a bit and imitates Ed Sullivan, Dick Clark, and former president Clinton as he emcees an alphabetization exercise called the Alphabet Dance. The vagaries of the English language are exposed when a bird of paradise plant transforms into an exotically plumed bird of paradise, and then that same bird rolls a pair of dice. A tiny bit of sophistication seems to have seeped into the wide-eyed world of Reader Rabbit, and it will probably be appreciated by kids who have cut their pop-culture teeth on the rapid-fire fare provided by Nickelodeon and Nintendo.

Fear not, Reader Rabbit and Mat the Mouse still run a pretty straight-laced establishment, with plenty of opportunities for parents to check progress, control gameplay and levels, and educate themselves about educating their young readers. But there's a bit more sass here than in the Reader Rabbit programs designed for younger kids--an intelligent way for the series to adjust to its increasingly sophisticated audience. (Ages 5 to 8) --Anne Erickson

Only works with old Macs, 2010-03-06
I missed the detail that this only works with OS 9 and below. I haven't used that for many years so we were unable to use this at all. I have some good experiences with the Reader Rabbit brand, so that was disappointing.
Not what I hoped for, 2009-08-04
My 5-year old couldn't wait to play with this software (game). He got bored very quickly, so I went to a different game, but he wasn't real impressed there either. He played all the games, but didn't find this very fun or exciting. I was hoping it would be more educational, but found it to be just "ok".
Only barely worth the money, 2009-05-20
After reading many good reviews, I purchased this software for my 4yo who is just starting to read. I am very disappointed in the product.

First, it did not come with installation or use instructions. Installation was pretty standard, so we were able to figure it out. How to use the game, however, was not so standard. We had to figure it out through trial and error. It took perhaps a half hour or so, but having the instructions would have been very helpful.

Second, the software contains books for the child to read, but they are automatically read to the child. There is no way to turn off the feature so the child can read it herself (unless I just have not found the means to do it without the instructions).

Next, there is a character that has a foreign accent. My daughter started to say the words just like that character, like "bed" instead of "bad." I thought this was a really bad idea for children that are learning how to sound out words.

Lastly, I thought the program moved really slowly. The game is set up so that the child has to finish one area before moving on to the next. There is so much animation mixed in with the games that it takes so long to finish one area so you can move on. There is no way to bypass the animation. So it may take 2 seconds for a child to get a question right, but then she has to watch 10-15 seconds of animation before even seeing the next problem. It was interesting for her the first time around, but after that, my daughter was getting bored with seeing the same animation over and over after each problem. This might work for a child that likes to watch TV and hates phonics, but my daughter really wants to learn to read, so this did not work for her at all. I would not recommend this software.

Reader Rabbit Doesn't Work - NO TECH SUPPORT, 2009-04-06
We were unable to install this on any of 3 computers. The installer has major errors. BAD NEWS There is no tech support for these products. What a total waste of money
     Reader Rabbit, 2009-04-01
One of the best things is that children are more willing
to participate to play and learn at the same time. They
can learn through playing repeatly until they master on
    it.
