It does what they offer well., 2010-07-24
For the price (58$) it's a good product, fills what they offer and I'd recommend it. It made me avoid to buy a new Sound Component for the moment.
It's a good product and works well, but output level seems to be not enough powerful (a little poor) for my Audio Components even at highest volume.
As they say, it does not support Dolby 5.1 (and when TV's Surround Option is active, it includes when tuned in an analog broadcasting and TV's Surround Option is on), the sound will be muted (I suppose it will also happens when a digital signal with Dolby 5.1 is received).
If you want to always enjoy "Surround" from your TV set or Dolby 5.1, you'd have to buy the more expensive Gefen model (more than 100$) provided that your already owned Sound Components is expensive enough to justify to buy it (if not I would rather buy a whole new sound equipment).
Let me also say that they include the Optical Cable with the product so you don't have to buy an additional one.
Works great, 2010-07-10
Bought this to connect my parents new LG 55LH90 TV to a Ramsey SHA1C Stereo Headphone Amplifier Kit I had bought for my dad years ago. Hookup was simple. Just remove the covers from the ends of the included optical cable, insert, plug in the AC wall wart, attach the RCA cord, done. Sound quality is great! Don't let anyone talk you into buying the more expensive 6 channel Gefen converter, you don't need it. My parents are on Comcast with a DVR cable box feeding the TV via HDMI. This 2 channel converter works fine with the signal from the optical out on the TV.
Exactly what was needed for LCD TV to output GREAT sound!, 2010-06-07
An excellent little box for converting optical audio to standard stereo.
Check the menu on your "source" for "force pcm" or "standard" audio out, and this unit will be the PERFECT way to
choose your LCD television based on picture and reviews, even if it doesnt have left and right analog audio out! (that is, assuming that it has optical out.)
Unit DID come with an optical cable, and unlike some reivews, I had no issue with the cable locking in nicely to both the TV out and the optical "in" on this little miracle box.
Used velcro to attach to the back of the LCD set, (a 26" Vizio LED lighted unit, new 2010) and then hooked the left and right audio RCA outputs to the older RCA stereo in an RV.
No problems, works as promised, NO loss of audio volume noticeable, and no distortion. With all due respect to the other reviewers, I believe them to be too critical and manufacturing their own "audio issues" on this.
An excellent way to add great Left and Right audio to your next LCD TV or other monitor with poor speakers but optical out.
Performs as it is supposed to, but at a price, 2010-06-06
This Gefen Digital-to-Analog converter does what it is supposed to, but you lose a lot of the power and volume that is native to untampered audio. During the step down process when this little box converts the sound from digital to analog, a lot of volume is lost. Now, as for sound quality, the actualy quality of the sound is barely touched. I, being an audiophile, have an ear for that, and I can safely tell you that the quality reduction is nominal. BUT, as you turn the volume up on your reciever, the amount of distortion becomes more easily audible. Although, that being said, to any normal person listening to the audio at a house rattling level, you won't notice the compression and distortion. All in all, it does what it is supposed to do, but it was by no means designed for any audiophile.
simple hook-up - works great (supports Optical too), 2010-06-04
Thanks to reviewers here I knew exactly what I was buying. Pls Note that I have a basic STEREO cable TV feed. Used an old RCA single string cable (non-coaxial and works well!) to connect to my TV. Used a "red left/white right" stereo RCA cable to connect to my home stereo as OUT... flipped the switch to Digital - Worked instantly. Btw it comes with one optical cable included if you home stereo supports optical input. Original Static Noise went away with tighter adjustment of cables.
